What six back surgeries taught Mark Hyman about health

TL;DR

Mark Hyman has spent his career working out what is wrong with other people's health. In this conversation with his producer Emma the questions turn to his own: mercury poisoning, chronic fatigue, Lyme disease, mold exposure, and six back surgeries, five of them in the last six years. What he took from it is not a cutting edge therapy but a very clear hierarchy of what actually matters.

A ruptured disc at 32 and a doctor who did not listen

Working as a family doctor in a small Idaho town, Hyman carried firewood with bad mechanics and ruptured a disc. The next day he was limping with no motor function in his foot. Emergency surgery relieved the nerve, but he reherniated ten days later lifting a single log. He went back, said something was wrong, and was brushed off. He was left with permanent calf weakness. His first lesson was that he could not rely on the experts alone to have every answer.

Chronic fatigue and the road to functional medicine

After a year in China breathing sooty winter air, with dental fillings and a fish heavy diet, Hyman had built up mercury without the genetics to clear it well. A severe gut infection was the trigger and everything collapsed from one day to the next: he went from riding 100 miles a day and recalling 30 patients without notes to not being able to climb the stairs. He was told he had depression and irritable bowel, and given Xanax and Prozac. A naturopath he met on a plane suggested testing his mercury. It came back among the highest he has ever seen in his practice. He learned functional medicine from the inside out, healing himself while every system in his body failed.

The Hail Mary surgery

In 2024 another herniation led to another operation and then to an epidural injection that got infected. In the small space of the spine, an abscess spreads like wildfire. He reached the final surgery septic, feverish, unable to sit up in bed, and 25 pounds lighter. The surgeon told him he would die without the operation and that he had a 5 to 10 percent chance of surviving it. He said goodbye to his family. They did a full fusion, cleaned out the abscess, and left a scar about a foot and a half long. He lost half his blood volume.

Rebuilding at 65

The first day after surgery he could not support his own weight. He started lying on the floor opening his knees against a band. In eight or nine months he put on 25 pounds of muscle, working hard through pain, fatigue, and a severe anemia that forced him to eat a lot of meat to rebuild iron. He slept four hours a night for six weeks. His conclusion: the body has an enormous repair capacity at any age if you give it the right inputs, above all protein, nutrients, creatine, anti inflammatory foods, microbiome work, and rest. Since then daily exercise is non negotiable, and he cannot go more than two days without moving.

The rapid fire tool review

Hyman calls himself a guinea pig and has tried almost everything. He uses cold plunges for inflammation and mental clarity, but never right after training because they blunt hypertrophy, and he notes that some women in the luteal phase do not feel good from them. He saunas most days, a couple of 15 minute rounds, for heat shock proteins and cardiovascular health. He has a large red light panel he uses for about 20 minutes to speed tissue repair. He used IV therapy with glutathione, vitamin C, and B vitamins to detox from chronic fatigue. He uses peptides such as thymosin alpha 1 when traveling and BPC-157 for injury, always with a doctor and aware that most data is in animals. He takes vitamin D and creatine because he considers their risk to benefit ratio solid. A continuous glucose monitor he sees as useful mainly for people with metabolic problems, and of the 93 percent of Americans in poor metabolic health, he is not one.

Why he will not take metformin

Many people use metformin as a longevity drug because it activates AMPK, but it also inhibits mitochondrial complex I. In 12 week studies, people who strength train while taking metformin do not gain muscle and the placebo group does. For Hyman, compromising the ability to hold muscle with age is not worth it. His general test is simple: a plausible mechanism, some evidence even if early, and a favorable risk, cost, and benefit balance.

What actually matters

What makes him cringe about the wellness world is over indexing on the secondary, peptides, exosomes, stem cells, red light, while the primary is minimized: real food, exercise, sleep, stress management, and basic supplements. Going to McDonald's every day and doing red light therapy fixes nothing. After facing his own mortality, he says he is at peace and far more committed to what really counts: family, friends, community, and his health.

Bottom line

Hyman's story does not sell a device or a protocol. He says the body is not broken, it is just not getting what it needs to do its job, and that solid foundations beat any trendy therapy, especially when it is time to truly recover.
