Two independent studies published in Nature a week apart found that by ages 60 to 80, roughly 85 percent of the brain's microglia are no longer the original embryonic cells but instead came from blood monocytes that migrated in and settled there.

  • Metrics: Replacement is minimal before age 50 and reaches about 85% between ages 60 and 80; it was observed similarly in the hippocampus, occipital cortex, putamen, and cerebellum.
  • Exceptions: People with large clonal hematopoiesis (CHIP) clones, blood mutations usually linked to cardiovascular risk, have less Alzheimer's disease and less amyloid and tau, suggesting some of these replacement cells may protect rather than harm.

How working memory and mastery help students learn faster

A student stuck at a 710 math SAT score jumped to 790 as soon as she went back and memorized her multiplication tables, because the problem was never focus but working memory being drained by basic arithmetic.

  • What to do: Before moving to harder material, confirm the fundamentals (multiplication tables, fractions, core vocabulary) are memorized to fluency, not just passed at 80%.
  • Why it matters: Working memory is limited; an unautomated skill eats capacity needed for multi-step reasoning, so basic gaps quietly slow down all later learning.

  • Metrics: Alpha School closed an average 2.2 grade-level gap in just 20 to 30 hours of targeted instruction per level; on national standardized tests, the average student gains only one point between eighth and twelfth grade on a 300-point scale.
  • Exceptions: Younger students benefit more from initial repetition than from worked examples, which pay off most on complex, multi-step material like algebra.

How your gut health could be driving your ADHD symptoms

A juvenile detention center that swapped processed meals for whole foods saw violent incidents drop by 97 percent, a striking sign that ADHD-like behavior can be driven as much by the gut as by the brain.

  • What to do: Rebuild breakfast around protein, fat, and fiber, and cut ultra-processed food, added sugar, and artificial dyes, which controlled studies link to worse behavior.

  • Metrics: In adults 70 and older a strong sense of purpose is the single best psychological predictor of longevity, and the 2023 US Surgeon General advisory rated loneliness a larger premature mortality risk than smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
  • Exceptions: The first week of practice often increases anxiety because you start to notice how chaotic your mind is, and it usually drops below baseline after about a week.

Why people won't change and how to actually help them

Two mental bodyguards block change. One guards your energy by keeping roughly 11 million of your thoughts on autopilot, and one guards your ego, and a study found people value affirmation of a treasured identity more than their favorite food or time with a friend.

  • What to do: End each day with two questions, what did I learn and did I try my best, instead of what did I get right or wrong, to avoid the learned helplessness that comes from feeling like a failure.
  • Why it matters: Change feels like the Stroop test because it requires unlearning first, letting go of the known before learning the new, so demanding instant change from others ignores how hard it was for you.
  • How to apply it: You can model, invite and reward change but not force it, so use pull over push, make your own struggles visible, and recognize tiny attempts rather than correcting them.
  • Tools: Run the WAIT rule, why am I talking, and ask whether someone wants to be heard, hugged, helped or high fived, since about 90 percent want to be heard, and give feedback as specific behavior plus expectation plus impact rather than adjectives.
  • Exceptions: When someone is not ready to change and your support is only propping up the dynamic, the one remaining move is to step out of it.

Ketogenic diet and mental health: the mitochondria link

A ketogenic diet taken to blood ketones above roughly 0.8 mmol/L for depression and above 1.5 for psychosis appears to renew brain mitochondria through mitophagy and biogenesis. In one of psychiatrist Chris Palmer's cases, a man with eight years of daily hallucinations and 17 failed medications saw his psychosis recede within six to eight weeks.

  • What to do: If the problem is mild burnout or subclinical low mood, trial carbohydrate restriction for a few weeks, starting by cutting ultra processed foods that are high in sugar and fat together.
  • Why it matters: The ketogenic diet was built in 1921 at the Mayo Clinic for epilepsy and still makes about one third of drug resistant patients seizure free, which is why decades of neuroscience exist on how it changes glutamate, GABA, inflammation and the gut microbiome.
  • How to apply it: For serious disorders such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, do the diet with a clinician who can adjust medication, aim for measured ketosis, and never stop psychiatric drugs abruptly or unsupervised.
  • Metrics: Palmer targets ketones above 0.8 mmol/L for depression and above 1.5 for psychotic and bipolar disorders, and patients who never reached ketosis usually got no benefit.
  • Exceptions: Not everyone needs full keto, and for some patients simply removing sugar and junk food is enough to shift a mood disorder.
