How your gut microbiome translates diet and stress into health
Emeran Mayer reframes the gut microbiome as a transducer that converts diet, stress, and toxins into the body's chemical language, and estimates that a third to a half of the roughly 6,000 metabolites in your blood originate there.
- What to do: Eat 30 to 35 different plants a week, split across a varied bowl in the morning and a complex salad at night, prioritize prebiotic fiber, polyphenols, and naturally fermented foods, and cut ultra processed food.
- Why it matters: Microbes produce anti inflammatory short chain fatty acids like butyrate, and the balance between those and pro inflammatory molecules decides an organ's health, the brain included. About 60 percent of the American diet is ultra processed and damages the microbiome directly.
- How to apply it: Add garlic, onion, leek, asparagus, legumes, cooked and cooled potato or rice, and green banana daily for fiber; cranberry, pomegranate, and green tea for polyphenols; sauerkraut, kimchi, and kefir for ferments. Work on sleep, exercise, purpose, and community gradually too.
- Metrics: about 40 trillion gut bacteria; a third to a half of roughly 6,000 blood metabolites are microbial; Alzheimer's and Parkinson's changes visible in the microbiome from the 40s; the best stool tests are still limited.
