You can move a loaded bar with minimal force if you're far from failure; what matters is how much force you're putting in on each rep, which shows up as bar speed. As you push closer to failure, movement slows and the quality of force production drops. That means a heavy set of five taken to failure often produces lower-quality reps overall than the same load broken into a couple of shorter sets, kept further from failure, with more force applied to each rep. The tradeoff is a smaller total volume of "all-out" effort in exchange for a lower recovery cost and typically comparable or better strength outcomes.

For someone who already trains consistently and just wants to preserve strength while training less intensely, casual CrossFit sessions and lighter lifting are not "useless." They still generate meaningful training load, especially if effort is applied with intent, staying moderate to heavy but further from failure, and pushing hard within each rep rather than grinding to the limit. It's also worth checking whether a new strength block was layered on top of an already full training schedule rather than replacing part of it; stacking training load without adjusting anything else is a common reason lifters start feeling more aches and tweaks than usual. The priority isn't training to failure, it's finding a training load you can sustain consistently over months and years without burning out or getting hurt. That's especially true if strength and mobility are the goal for the long run: a program you can keep doing for a decade beats a program that produces faster gains but leaves you too beat up to continue.
